Getting a Tier3 Account
1. Requesting computer accounts
In order to access any of the computing resources in the HEP department you need (at a minimum) an account on the HEPComputingCluster
. You will also need an account on the Tier3. Access to the MSU Tier3 requires the approval of a tenured MSU ATLAS faculty member. Both of these accounts may be obtained at the same time by having a tenured MSU ATLAS faculty member
email both the HEP cluster administrator George Perkins
and the Tier3 administrator Richard Drake
with the request and the following information:
- your first and last name
- your office number (or where you can be found) and
- your preferred username.
Keep in mind that when you join ATLAS (an independent process) you will be assigned a CERN username that is likely
to be of the form <first letter of your first name><your last name> (e.g. Jane West --> jwest). Some users find it useful to have the same username on the MSU cluster to simplify logging in to CERN computers, but it is not necessary.
2. Changing your password
After your accounts have been created you will be given a username and two temporary passwords: one for the HEP cluster and one for the Tier3. These passwords will be given to you in person and will never be transmitted through email. You should change your temporary passwords as soon as possible.
- On the HEP cluster
- Log in or SSH to a machine on the HEPComputingCluster using your username and temporary password. In a terminal type 'kpasswd'. You will be prompted for your current password and then asked to enter in a new password.
- On the Tier3
- SSH to one of the Tier3LoginNodes and type 'kpasswd'. You will be prompted for your current password and then asked to enter in a new password.
