Using the Tier3

What is it?

The Tier3 is the combination of three different utilities.
  • Several file servers
  • Several hundred compute nodes for running large numbers of jobs, which are part of the HTCondor infrastructure.
  • A few login nodes for managing files, running basic scripts, and submitting jobs to HTCondor.
These utilities are used in conjunction with one another to break up computing tasks into smaller pieces that can be run simultaneously, thereby reducing the length of time the task takes. This parallelization of computing tasks is handled by HTCondor.

What is it not?

The Tier3 login nodes should be used for managing and downloading files from the GRID, submitting jobs to HTCondor, and running simple scripts and executables. They should NOT be used for directly running complicated frameworks or tasks that use signifiicant CPU or memory.
