Nearly 100% of the BPS building's public areas are covered by the MSUnet Wireless network (http://tech.msu.edu/wireless/). A large number of access point antennas are active in most areas to support large numbers of users at once. Most visitors' Internet connection needs can be satisfied by the wireless network.

This is the simplest connection method for use in the Atrium and adjacent classrooms. (You may also find this network in 3rd floor offices, but the signal is weak and performance is likely unacceptable.)

To connect to MSUnet Wireless Guest network:

  • Select wireless network SSID "MSUnet Wireless Guest"
  • Try to load a webpage, for example http://www.msu.edu/
    • You will be redirected to the login page
    • Accept the Terms of Use and press "I Agree" button on webpage (no login ID is required)
  • You can now reach off campus computers

See http://www.wireless.msu.edu/ for more information.

Connecting to MSUnet Wireless Network (Non-Guest)

Using the guest network is easier, see above. The guest and non-guest networks run on the same channels, so there is no performance advantage to using one or the other. If you do hit a firewall limitation, use this connection method.

Registering a Network Adapter

To use the wired network and some of the ad-hoc wireless access points, your network adapter needs to be registered. This registration is based on the network adapter's MAC address. Wired and wireless network adapters must be registered individually.

To register:

  • Enable the desired network adapter and get a network address using DHCP
  • Open a web browser to https://dhcp.msu.edu/
    • Enter MSU NetID login/password. (Use your host's, a conference shared ID, or contact Tom Rockwell)
    • Accept the Terms of Use and submit
  • Wait about 2 minutes for registration to complete
  • Restart the network adapter to get a new IP address using DHCP (try rebooting if you are unsure how to do this)
