Polycom Unit is Malfunctioning

See instructions at http://information-technology.web.cern.ch/services/fe/howto/users-use-h323sip-client-connect-vidyo-meeting. The three HD polycoms are all registered as rooms under the CERN Vidyo service. For the two MSU-based units, both audio and video work just fine.

Changed:
<
<
This comment note applies to the older non-HD polycoms, we haven't seen crashes with the new ones.
>
>
To connect from a Polycom to a CERN meeting, connect to vidyogw.cern.ch (better from Europe) or cern-vidyo-gateway0.internet2.edu (better from the US).

You should also be able to call the room from within Vidyo by using the Vidyo room name from the table above.
Polycom Manual

Changed:
<
<
Both of the Polycoms occasionally have trouble and need rebooting. Symptoms vary and they rarely crash completely. To reboot the system, turn the machine off and on using the power switch at left rear. You won't need to do this more than once.
>
>
The instruction manual for the HDX 8000 is available at http://support.polycom.com/global/documents/support/setup_maintenance/products/video/hdx_ag.pdf

Network Trouble

This is rare these days, but the campus network or MSU's link to the greater Internet does sometimes slow down or fail. If people are having trouble with slow web page loading etc., the IP video conferencing will be impaired as well. We can't fix this, though you can check for trouble messages at http://help.msu.edu/
Deleted:
<
<
ESNet Trouble

The servers needed for running multi-point video conferences sometimes have issues. If this is happening, normally all participants will be effected. Try contacting (via email or phone) other meeting participants to see if the trouble is widespread. Contact ESNet at http://www.ecs.es.net/

User Error / Wrong Number

You need to have the proper number and enter it correctly into the system. All "ad-hoc" meetings will use numbers that start with an 8 (usually 85 or 88). Set the speed to 356 or 768 (128 will probably fail). Using the address book for repeated meetings will avoid trouble with entering the number.

Remote Connections

Remote users can establish a point-to-point connection by calling the above IP numbers.

EVO users my connect point-to-point by starting an H.323 connection, checking "gatekeeper" and specifying ALIAS@198.129.252.168 (use the ALIAS given above).

The HDX 8000 units have builtin mulit-point meeting capability. Up to 3 remote connections are possible.

This comment note applies to the older non-HD polycoms, we haven't seen crashes with the new ones.
Both of the Polycoms occasionally have trouble and need rebooting. Symptoms vary and they rarely crash completely. To reboot the system, turn the machine off and on using the power switch at left rear. You won't need to do this more than once.

Most trouble with video usage falls into these catagories:
Line: 28 to 28

You need to have the proper number and enter it correctly into the system. All "ad-hoc" meetings will use numbers that start with an 8 (usually 85 or 88). Set the speed to 356 or 768 (128 will probably fail). Using the address book for repeated meetings will avoid trouble with entering the number.

Network Trouble

This is rare these days, but the campus network or MSU's link to the greater Internet does sometimes slowdown or fail. If people are having trouble with slow web page loading etc., the Polycom IP video conferencing will be impaired as well. We don't have a fix for this, though you can check for trouble messages at http://help.msu.edu/

The servers needed for running multi-point video conferences sometimes have issues. If this is happening, normally all participants will be effected. Try contacting (via email or phone) other meeting participants to see if the trouble is widespread. Contact ESNet at http://www.ecs.es.net/
