JSPS Summer Program

The JSPS Summer program is intended for all graduate students and recent doctoral graduates and consists of a summer stay in Japan at a "host research institution". The application for the program is done through NSF under the East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) program, where Japan is one of the options for research.
Added:
>
>

The program is a two month stay in Japan at your corresponding host institution, starting roughly the second week of June, and ending in the middle of August. The first week is an orientation week which contains various events, such as Japanese language classes. Starting from roughly the second week you move to where your host research institution is located and conduct research through out the summer until the middle of August. At the end of the program, you meet back together with the other JSPS Summer fellows and give reports on your research.

The fellowship itself contains round-trip airfare from the US to the Narita - Tokyo Airport, a $5000 stipend from NSF, and living expenses to be covered by JSPS. From the 2015 year the amount was 534,000 Yen, or just under $4300 for living expenses. Note that if you are receiving other federal funds (such as the NSF Graduate Fellowship) you need to check if you are still eligible to receive the NSF stipend for EAPSI. Regardless of your US federal funding status, you wil still receive the JSPS stipend for living expenses.

Most of the logistics for the program are to be carried out by the applicant and the host researcher both before and after the application and possible acceptance. Before applying you should have already contacted your host researcher and have a formal acceptance of your summer research as well as confirming the details of your research in Japan, such as what research you will participate in and where you plan to be working. These details are needed for the NSF application as explained in the How to Apply section on the website. Upon acceptance, applicants are to book their own housing in Japan with help from their host researcher.

Both the JSPS website and the NSF EAPSI website contain a lot of useful information on how the whole process works. In particular the NSP EAPSI Japan guide is a very good overview of the program.
