Variables from the SingleTop D3PDs for Multivariate Analysis

0. Introduction

This is an overview of the variables contained in the SgTop trees, PreTag and Tag versions for signal isolation.

Many of the variables share a common terminology:
  • UJet is an untagged jet
  • BJet is a b-tagged jet
  • LastJet is the jet in the event with the lowest Pt (in a 3 jet event, this would be Jet3)
  • Neutrino is an object with its Pz information reconstructed from information about the lepton and assuming the W mass.
  • BestJet is the jet that gives the invariant mass of W+BestJet closest to the expected top quark mass (we take this as 175 GeV)
  • TopJetXX is the reconstructed top using the lepton and neutrino in the event to reconstruct the W and some choice of jet (XX) for the b-quark
  • P refers to momentum, Pt refers to transverse momentum
  • e refers to energy, et refers to transverse energy
  • Lepton refers to the lepton in the event (muon or electron) with the highest pt.
    • The single-top group selects for exactly one muon or electron in the event, so Lepton is also the only muon or electron in the event for non-dilepton cutflows

Other information:
  • The energy unit by default is MeV
  • Forms like Jet1 refers to the leading (highest Pt) jet in the event. Jet2 is the jet with the second-highest Pt in the event, etc.

1. Channel (Integer) Quantities

  • AllJetsNumber
    • number of selected jets in the event (an example jet selection is pt > 20 GeV).
  • TaggedJetsNumber
    • number of selected b-tagged jets in the event
  • UntaggedJetsNumber
    • number of selected un-tagged jets in the event
  • Lepton_charge
    • lepton charge, often used with the pdgid
  • Lepton_pdgid
    • PDG ID, 11 for electrons and 13 for muons

2. Jet Kinematics

Combination P and Pt

Note that the six variables below are kintematics for the combined object- so Jet1Jet2_pt isn't the sum of thet Jet1 pt and Jet2 pt. It is the pt of Jet1 + Jet2 and so it is different from Ht_Jet1Jet2
  • Jet1Jet2_pt
    • transverse momentum of the combination of the two jets with the highest transverse momentum
  • Jet1Jet2_p
    • momentum of the combination of the two jets with the highest transverse momentum
  • Jet1Jet2LeptonNeutrino_Pt
    • transverse momentum of the combination of the two jets with the highest transverse momentum plus the lepton and reconstructed neutrino
  • P_AllJets
    • momentum of the combination of all of the selected jets in the event
  • Pt_AllJetsMinusBestJet
    • transverse momentum of the combination of all selected jets in the event excluding the best jet
  • Pt_BJet1BJet2
    • transverse momentum of the combination of the two b-tagged jets with the highest transverse momenta

Other Information

  • LastJet_pt
    • transverse momentum of the selected jet in the event with the lowest transverse momentum
  • LastJet_p
    • momentum of the selected jet in the event with the lowest transverse momentum

  • MinJetEta
    • Value of eta of the jet in the event which is closest to a position in eta of zero
  • MaxJetEta
    • Value of eta of the jet in the event which is farthest from a position in eta of zero

  • BestJet_eta
    • eta of the best jet
  • BestJet_pt
    • transverse momentum of the best jet
  • BestJet_phi
    • phi of the best jet

  • NotBestJet1_eta
    • eta of the jet that has the highest transverse momentum of the jets not classified as best jet
  • NotBestJet1_pt
    • pt of the jet that has the highest transverse momentum of the jets not classified as best jet
  • NotBestJet1_phi
    • phi of the jet that has the highest transverse momentum of the jets not classified as best jet

  • NotBestJet2_eta
    • eta of the jet that has the second-highest transverse momentum of the jets not classified as best jet
  • NotBestJet2_pt
    • pt of the jet that has the second-highest transverse momentum of the jets not classified as best jet
  • NotBestJet2_phi
    • phi of the jet that has the second-highest transverse momentum of the jets not classified as best jet

  • Jet1_eta
    • eta of the jet with the highest transverse momentum
  • Jet1_phi
    • phi of the jet with the highest transverse momentum
  • Jet1_pt
    • transverse momentum of the jet with the highest transverse momentum
  • Jet1_e
    • energy of the jet with the highest transverse momentum

  • Jet2_eta
    • eta of the jet with the second-highest transverse momentum
  • Jet2_phi
    • phi of the jet with the second-highest transverse momentum
  • Jet2_pt
    • transverse momentum of the jet with the second-highest transverse momentum
  • Jet2_e
    • energy of the jet with the second-highest transverse momentum

  • Jet3_eta
    • eta of the jet with the third-highest transverse momentum
  • Jet3_phi
    • phi of the jet with the third-highest transverse momentum
  • Jet3_pt
    • transverse momentum of the jet with the third-highest transverse momentum
  • Jet3_e
    • energy of the jet with the third-highest transverse momentum

  • Jet4_eta
    • eta of the jet with the fourth-highest transverse momentum
  • Jet4_phi
    • phi of the jet with the fourth-highest transverse momentum
  • Jet4_pt
    • transverse momentum of the jet with the fourth-highest transverse momentum
  • Jet4_e
    • energy of the jet with the fourth-highest transverse momentum

Note: Missing Et refers to Missing Et, while Neutrino indicates the Neutrino has been reconstructed making W mass assumptions See introduction remarks for a defintion of Lepton

Cosines

Here, as earlier, leading jet refers to the jet with the largest pt in the event
  • Cos_Jet1RAllJets_AllJets
    • cosine between the leading jet and the all-jets system, in the rest frame of the all-jets system.
  • Cos_BJet1RAllJets_AllJets
    • cosine between the leading b-tagged jet and the all-jets system, in the rest frame of the all-jets system.
  • Cos_UJet1RAllJets_AllJets
    • cosine between the leading untagged jet and the all-jets system, in the rest frame of the all-jets system.
  • Cos_NotBestJetAllJets_AllJets
    • cosine between the leading jet that is not the best jet and the all-jets system, in the rest frame of the all-jets system.

  • Cos_Lepton_UJet1_RBJet1Top
    • cosine between the leading untagged jet and the lepton, both in the rest frame of the top quark reconstructed using the leading b-tagged jet. This is the spin correlation variable in the optimal basis for the t-channel.
  • Cos_LeptonRW_WRBestJetTop
    • cosine between the lepton in the rest frame of the W and the W in the rest frame of the top quark reconstructed using the best jet. Also known as cos w helicity theta star
  • Cos_Jet1RCM_Zaxis
    • cosine between leading jet and beam axis in the center of mass frame. Also known as cos Jet1 theta star
  • Cos_Lepton_Zaxis_RBestJetTop
    • cosine between the lepton and the beam axis (which includes the lepton charge this time), both in the rest frame of the top quark reconstructed using the best jet
