Also, for most users, the campus VPN will be a better option for protecting connection from off-campus. See http://network.msu.edu/public/vpn/

Create an ssh tunnel to the IMAP server to make the IMAP connection local to the server. This works around a number of issues that can arise when using IMAP remotely.

You can use ssh keys and ssh-agent to make it more convenient to connect to the IMAP server, see SshKeys.

Setup

Download the attached file sshmail. It is configured for mail.pa.msu.edu edit it if you use a different server. Also, if your username is different on the server than on the client, you'll need to specify your username.

Then setup your email client like this:

  • Email client settings specifying the server:
    server_settings.png

  • Client settings for the outgoing server:
    outgoing_server_settings.png

  • Details of the outgoing server settings:
    outgoing_server_details.png

Using it

To use this, you must open the ssh tunnel. Run the script sshmail from the command line, ssh will ask for your password to mail.pa.msu.edu. Your email client will asked for the password to "localhost", here you again give your password to mail.pa.msu.edu (this is for the actual IMAP connection).
